UCLA Gymnastics is a very well known team in the gymnastics world, one of their most notable athletes is Jordan Chiles. Jordan Chiles competed in the 2021 and 2024 Olympic Games for Team USA. Diving into her stats and UCLA's gives us insight that can help predict how Jordan and her team will do this year.
Down below on the right we can see the team scores from UCLA in the 2025 season that lead them to finish first in the Big Ten Conference Championships with second place in the NCAA Championships.
Then on the left we can see Jordan Chiles' individual data, I have highlighed her perfect tens in yellow and first place score in blue to show just how valuable Jordan is to UCLA. College Gymnastics scoring is on a scale of one to ten, where the gymnast starts at a base score of 9.40 and must fulfill specfic requirements to achieve a start value of 10.00, with bonus up to 0.1. When the gymnast performs their routine, deductions are taken from the start value for mistakes with bigger mistakes having larger deductions, leaving you with the final score. Scores are given individually for each event and added to get the All-Around score. So, the higher the score the better. For team scores, 6 athletes compete and 5 scores are counted and added together to make the team score. Taking a look at UCLA's team stats we can see the individual event scores for the team and team All-Around scores, with the place in parentheses. Elite gymnastics is the route gymnasts must take to compete in the Olympics, from qualifying rounds to elite-specifc competitions and score requirements. Elite scoring is much more complicated with higher start values, difficulty scores, and harsher deductions.
Another thing gymnastics fans should know about Jordan is that she is the ultimate hype woman. She is known for always bringing positive engery and uplifting her teammates. Her electric and iconic personality combined with her amazing scores have made her the face of UCLA Gymnastics. "She’s the big star among Bruin stars and the leader who will make her fellow band of Bruin gymnasts go." says Socal Sports Chronicles.
In the past two Olympic cycles, Jordan Chiles did really well in the preliminary elite championships, (The Gymternet: Interactive scores for Jordan Chiles' elite career) an indicator that she was going to make the Olympic team those years. Her stats in collegiate gymnastics along with her electric personality make her an iconic figure in women’s gymnastics. Because of this, it would be wise for UCLA to capitalize on her “fame” while she is still on the team, not only profiting off of her high scores but also off of the attention she could attract. Chiles is well known for fiercely supporting her teammates, using clips of her doing this at competitions in their promotional material would create a community and bring more viewers to UCLA, especially since Chiles is already known for being an Olympic gymnast. USA Gymnastics also has a really big opportunity here, with Simone Biles (supposedly) retiring, they are going to lose a chunk of the support they previously had. Chiles, however, is still competing in gymnastics and in the public eye, meaning she could be used to keep focus on women’s gymnastics. Collaborations, media content, merch collaborations, leotard collections with GK (the main leotard supplier), and so on are all ways to do this.
